The project
The villa was built as a white shell with large openings to the garden. Our job was to give each room its own character without losing the calm of the architecture — one material idea per room, repeated nowhere else.
In the hall, a blackened-steel stair spirals up the double-height volume and a single oversized painting sets the palette for the house. The floor is a pale limestone that runs through every ground-floor room.
The kitchen pairs sage lacquered cabinetry with a Calacatta island that folds down to the floor at one end. Open shelves replace wall cupboards on the garden side, so the windows stay clear.
Upstairs, the main bedroom is wrapped in oak panelling with a padded headboard wall, and the bathroom is lined in fluted travertine lit from a skylight above the free-standing tub.
